A famous writer once wrote “No war has ever been fought without medicos”. The history and tradition of Bangladesh Army Medical Corps is age old. From the time immemorial, military medical services is considered to be an important organ of any armed forces in peace and war. In the field of war, it is very essential to keep up the moral of the fighting troops and make them physically & mentally sound at all times to win the desired victory. Directorate General of Medical Service is consisting of Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Armed Forces Nursing Services. It started its voyage with the motto of Army Medical Corps "সমরে ও শান্তিতে রাখিব সুস্থ ", the motto of Army Dental Corps "দাঁতের স্বাস্থ্য রাখিব অক্ষুন্ন " and the motto of Armed Forces Nursing Services is "সেবায় ও ত্যাগে রহিব সমুজ্জল" .

The tasks and activities of this service are not confined to the field of war only, in peace time also its responsibilities are wide. The members of the army medical corps are, on principle, determined to render services to the sick and wounded irrespective of friends and enemies in the field of war. During the war of liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, a good number of doctors and paramedics of Army Medical Corps took active part in the liberation war of Bangladesh with a view to providing Medicare services to the freedom fighters. On the dark night of 25 March 1971 and its subsequent period a total 14 officers of Army Medical Corps embraced martyrdom for the cause of liberation of Bangladesh, among them 4 x officers were in the rank of Lt Col. In that war a total of 137 officers and soldiers of Army Medical Corps scarified their lives for an independent Bangladesh. The nations remembers those brave martyrs with due honour and respect even after 52 years of independence. In recognition of their contribution and supreme sacrifice in the liberation war, three officers and five soldiers received gallantry awards- "Bir Uttom", "Bir Bikkram" and "Bir Pratik" respectively.

During the liberation war Squadron Leader (later on Major General) M Shamsul Huq stood against the tyranny act of Pakistani occupation Forces and went to Agargola of India to organize a medical team with a view to providing Medicare services to the sick and injured persons. Within the short span of time, many doctors, nurses and medical students of Bangladesh came forward in groups to help him in materializing the noble dream. Among them there were the so-called accused of Agartola Conspiracy Case- Major (later on Brig Gen) Khurshid Uddin Ahmed and Major Shamsul. Besides, Major (later on Brig Gen) Maksul Hussain Chowdhury, Captain (Later on Major General) Mosaheb Hossain, Lieutenant (later on Colonel) Mukter Kamal Chowdhury. Lieutenant (Later on Major General) Mohammad Abul Hossain and others joined the liberation war in the spirit of dedication.

During the liberation war of Bangladesh, this organization was first established in our armed forces with the concerted and coordinated efforts of the patriotic citizens, doctors, medical students and paramedics. In September 1971, the Headquarter of Directorate General of Medical Service was established in Mujib Nagar, the first capital of Bangladesh and Squadron Leader M Shamsul Huq first assumed the prestigious appointment of Director General Medical Services.

In fact, the functions of Army Medical Corps started on 16 December 1971, the victory day of Bangladesh. Since its beginning, the members of the corps performed their assigned tasks and responsibilities sincerely despite many limitations such as trained manpower, modern medical equipment, resources constrains. Now with the passage of time, the corps has been well established to combat the challenge of the 21st century. The members of the army medical corps are now more professional and rendering quality services up to the expectation of the nations. The main task of Army Medical Corps is to provide treatment to the Armed Forces personnel and their families during peace and war, side by side the member of the corps are also committed to perform any task assigned to them for the sake of the nation. To keep pace with the advancement of medical science, all possible efforts have been taken by the Government to modernize all the Combined Military Hospitals through increasing budgets and imparting necessary training and motivations to all concerned. Army Medical Corps is now heading towards true progress and development.
