Armed Forces Institute of Pathology was established as a small laboratory designated as Army Pathological Laboratory (APL) in 1951. In 1974, a new beginning was made almost from a scratch to meet the growing requirements of medicine and with shortest possible time APL was re-structured and re-equipped with modern equipment. A gap was thus bridged and a great crisis was thus tied over. Untiring zeal and unflagging enthusiasm of all concerned quickly produced visible effects and the lab soon became a 'centre of excellence'. In 1976, APL was renamed as AFIP&T and a modern building was constructed into which the institute was shifted in early 1982. The institute was equipped with modern and sophisticated machines and equipment. Newer investigations had been added to the long list of the tests and from very beginning this institute reached its highest position in laboratory medicine in the country. To keep harmony in nomenclature with various institutes of this kind in the world, this institute was finally renamed as Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in 1991. This Institute is a proud recipient of "Independence Day Award-1987" for it's contribution in Medical Science. This Institute is recognized by the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS), University of Dhaka, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and also by Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) for postgraduate studies.
